DeAndre Yedlin lifts the lid on what it's like working with Newcastle United ace Miguel Almiron

DeAndre Yedlin has admitted he couldn't contain his excitement the day that Miguel Almiron was finally unveiled as a Premier League player in a Newcastle United shirt.

The playmaker's arrival was met with some scepticism from some pundits with Danny Mills admitting he wasn't excited about the Paraguay international taking his place in the Premier League.

But Yedlin - who played 56 games in Major League Soccer before signing for Tottenham Hotspur - is thrilled to have the South American alongside him at United.

Yedlin told Chronicle Live: "I knew the type of player he was before and it really doesn't surprise me.

"The performances he has put in have been excellent.

"He's a great player, he's fast, quick and creative.

"He is exactly the type of player we need now."

Almiron burst on to the scene for Newcastle in a 1-1 draw against Wolves last month, but it was his sparkling display in the clash with Huddersfield Town - when the 25-year-old made a bursting run before hitting the post in front of the Gallowgate End on his home debut - that caught the eye.

His excellent display had came after an incredible flag display from the home crowd who displayed his shirt name and number and a message that read: "I want to rely on you, and I want to do this together."

Within minutes it was obvious that United fans can rely on the Asunción-born player.

Yedlin said: "Coming from MLS I know what he is like and I was very excited on the day we signed him.

"I knew what we'd be getting.

"He is the type of player I'd rather have on my side rather than defending against.

"He is a tough player to play against because he's so quick with the ball.

"He is quite creative and makes some very good runs.

"The other good thing is that he's linking up so well with Rondon and Ayoze Perez.

"Credit to those three they are doing very well."

Almiron's arrival for £16million could yet go on to be a club record fee if he continues to be a success as his price could rise to £21million.

Yedlin feels that there could be more Transatlantic transfers like him and Almiron in the years to come.

He added: "I wouldn't say that MLS is level with the Premier League right now by any means.

"It definitely shows that it's growing and it shows the talent that is coming out of there now.

"It is great for MLS though.

"I came over here from Seattle and he's came over now from Atlanta.

"It's just good recognition for MLS if that keeps going."

Yedlin will return to Benton later this week after games for the United States against Ecuador and Chile over the international break.

With seven games left, Newcastle are close to securing their Premier League spot for next season after losing one of their last six games in the top-flight.

Yedlin's attitude going into the run-in, with Arsenal next up on April 1, is simple with the US international commenting: "We won't take our foot off the brake.

"We just have to keep going and focusing."
