The Arizona Cardinals are happy to have acquired receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Houston Texans. They are excited about what he could add to their offense and to their team.
One of the reasons they were able to acquire him for relatively little was his desire to get a new contract. The Cardinals acquired him most assuredly already knowing this.
However, with three years and nearly $40 million remaining on his contract, he isn’t looking for a contract extension. He just wants more money, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
Hopkins wasn’t looking for an extension; he was looking for a raise on his existing contract, which has three years left on it. And word other teams had gotten was that he wanted around what Julio Jones got, more than $20 million per year.
Breer explains that this is why the Cardinals were able to acquire Hopkins for relatively little.
It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals address the money issue. They do not have a lot of cap space remaining and Hopkins still has three years remaining on his deal.
Will he be content with some up-front money and adding guarantees? Or will he become a problem during the week if the Cardinals don’t give him new money this year?
