It was no secret that former Texans head coach Bill O’Brien and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had their issues. After all, it resulted in O’Brien sending the star wide receiver to Arizona for oft-injured David Johnson and a second-round pick.
The disastrous trade and 0-4 start to the season led to O’Brien’s firing as head coach and general manager on Monday. And even as some NFL fans looked for Hopkins to take some joy in O’Brien’s ouster, Hopkins instead has handled the news with class.
Following the news, Hopkins tweeted his response to the firing without actually mentioning O’Brien’s name. And while speaking to Cardinals reporters on Wednesday, Hopkins expanded on his reaction. He said via ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss:
“Yeah, of course I’ve seen it. It was all over the internet. A lot of memes and stuff included me in it and my name. But I wish bad on no one. Everyone in NFL just want to win a championship and some people aren’t able to do those things sometimes as a coach in certain places but I’m sure that … hopefully he can have success somewhere else.”
Again, that’s just all class.
Very few would blame Hopkins if he had negative remarks about O’Brien who let personal disagreements get in the way of football decisions. But good on Hopkins for taking the high road again.
