Dean Stockwell dead: Quantum Leap's Admiral Al Calavicci star dies aged 85

Dean Stockwell - famed for playing Admiral Al Calavicci on the popular sci-fi show Quantum Leap between 1989 and 1993 - has died.

The actor passed away at the age of 85 from natural causes, TMZ report.

Dean died early on Sunday morning at home, his rep told the publication.

Following the sad news, several fans of the actor rushed to social media to pay tribute to Dean.

One fan penned: "I Just heard the news. The world's of film and television just lost one of its finest. RIP Dean Stockwell."

A second echoed: "RIP Dean Stockwell. I’m so unbelievably sad. What a talent.."

A third reflected: "I had the pleasure of seeing Dean Stockwell’s work twice; Beverly Hills Cop 2, and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. He chewed the scenery of every ounce of film he was in. RIP."

American star Dean received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role in the 1988 comedy-crime movie Married to the Mob and four Emmy nominations for his role in Quantum Leap.

Dean nearly quit his acting career just before he got his big break in Wim Wenders’ film, Paris, Texas.

He had planned to become an estate agent and was going to move his family away from Hollywood before Harry Dean Stanton convinced him to take part in the movie.

After working on several films - including the original Dune, Texas and Blue Velvet - he won his role in Quantum Leap and became a big name on the Sci-Fi scene.

He also worked on several big series including Battlestar Galactica, JAG, The Tony Danza Show and NCIS: New Orleans.

American star Dean worked in the movie business for over 70 years after starting his career as a teenager and he retired in 2015.
