Dean Smith sends message to Emiliano Martinez after blunder vs West Ham

Emiliano Martinez retains the full support of Aston Villa boss Dean Smith despite a sloppy performance against West Ham.

Argentine shot-stopper Martinez,28, struggled in a 3-1 Premier League home loss to the Hammers.

Jesse Lingard scored twice for the visitors on his debut as Martinez got a hand to both shots but couldn't keep them out.

Yet Smith refused to criticise his £17million summer signing from Arsenal after 10 clean sheets this season in the top-flight already.

“Very disappointing goals,” assessed Smith.

“I can't moan too much about our goalkeeper the way he has done this season.

“He has 10 clean sheets already.

“He is having an excellent season so far and one mistake certainly won't disappoint the Villa fans and myself with how he has done this season.”

Villa, who are ninth, return to action on Saturday at home to Arsenal.

Midfielder John McGinn says Smith's men must be more streetwise and look to repeat their display from their previous 1-0 win at Southampton.

The Scot said: “We know we are a good team and we didn't show it enough.

“The manner of the goals were disappointing and if we want to do what we can achieve this season then we have to be a lot more streetwise and a lot tighter as a team.

“We need to show a lot more quality and that goes for all of us.

“We have to do more starting Saturday at Villa Park which is another tough game.

“But if we want to achieve things then it has got to be three points.

“The team spirit will always be there but we need to fight the same way we did at Southampton and we will do that on Saturday.”

Villa's new £14million French midfielder Morgan Sanson came off the bench with ten minutes left to make his debut against West Ham.

McGinn added: “He has settled in well , is a good pro and comes with a good CV.

“He came on and showed he can play and hopefully he can be a good addition for us.”
