Dean Smith reveals how John Terry has become pivotal figure at Aston Villa

Dean Smith has hailed John Terry as Aston Villa’s Mr Motivator.

Villa boss Smith has used motivational speakers to inspire his squads in previous spells in charge of Walsall and Brentford.

During his last job at Brentford in West London, he even got in Frank Lampard to address his troops.

But he says he has no need at Villa since taking charge in October with Chelsea legend Terry as his assistant.

Ex-Blues and England skipper Terry, 38, had a glittering career and will be urging Villa to return to the top-flight on Monday at the expense of Lampard’s Derby in the Championship play-off final.

Asked if he had used any motivational speakers at Villa, Smith, 48, replied: “No, I have got John Terry here.

“He’s won everything in the game.

“He’s been at the pinnacle in his playing career as the captain of Chelsea, the captain of England and lifting the Premier League trophy five times.

“I don’t need to go and get anybody else in.

“I also have players who have played in the Premier League a lot as well, so it’s very important that we have the people here already.”

Villa booked their place in the final with victory on penalties at arch-rivals West Brom.

Derby came from 2-0 down on aggregate to win 4–3 overall at Leeds – sparking memorable scenes and a £2,800 bar bill for Lampard and his squad.

Smith, whose side came fifth after a 10-game winning streak, added: “I heard about it.

“They looked like they had a good night.

“Fair play - Leeds is a tough place to go and turn a scoreline around.

“They did that, so credit to them.

“But I certainly will buy some drinks if we win.

“The bookmakers will probably have us as favourites with the way we finished the season but it is a one-off game at Wembley.

“Derby have just been and beaten Leeds.

“For me it is a 50/50 game.

“We are confident but I am sure Frank will be sitting in the same seat and say they are confident too.”
