Dean Saunders explains his ridiculous goal of the season shout

Dean Saunders bizarrely hailed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's effort as his goal of the season - and has now explained why.

Aubameyang was Arsenal's match-winner with a bizarre goal against Watford last Monday, charging down Ben Foster’s clearance to secure a nervy 1-0 win.

It was far from a spectacular strike but could ultimately prove crucial in the race for Champions League football as the Gunners moved back into the top four.

Former Liverpool striker Saunders then claimed it was his goal of the season, despite Mohamed Salah's stunning long range strike against Chelsea just the previous day.

How Man City's win over Tottenham has affected the Premier League top-four race

The TV pundit was rightly questioned for his decision, and has now attempted to justify his bold claim.

“Salah’s goal is just an opportunistic strike,” he said on BT Sport.

“As a goalscorer, that’s how you earn your living - goals like that (Aubameyang).

“It’s my favourite goal of the season, not the best.

"I think those goals are your bread and butter. He’s turned that out of nothing, into a goal. You have to chase a goalkeeper 100 times just go get one of them.

“It’s my favourite goal. Aubameyang is a multi-millionaire, playing for Arsenal and he’s still putting that effort in to go and get goals.

“He’s gone up in my estimation.”

Why Hugo Lloris missed Tottenham's Premier League clash with Man City

Aubameyang himself admitted his goal was no match for Salah's in an interview immediately after the game.

“It is a good goal for me, I like it!" Aubameyang said. "It was a great goal from Mo Salah, unbelievable goal.

"But I like sometimes to score one like mine. Maybe it was not an easy goal, but it was easier than Mo!"
