Dean Saunders drops Rangers blooper and claims Ibrox side don't have the funds to challenge Celtic

Dean Saunders doesn't think Rangers have the funds to stop Celtic reaching 9 in a row this season.

The former Aston Villa and Wales hero is a huge fan of Steven Gerrard but reckons the Ibrox boss will come up short again.

Saunders, appearing on Alan Brazil's talkSPORT show, acknowledged the Ibrox side had "got a bit closer" to the Hoops last season - although he risked the wrath of Gers fans when he claimed Gerrard's side only beat their rivals once.

Rangers in fact won two of the four Old Firm derbies, although they still finished the season nine points behind.

Saunders said: "Steven Gerrard has raised interest in the Scottish game just by going there.

"It had got to the point where Celtic were just running away with everything and it was about who would finish second.

"But he has got Rangers a bit closer to Celtic. He's beaten them once hasn't he?

"Has he got the funds to go and take Celtic on? I don't think so."

Gerrard has made eight signings in the summer window although just one of those - £3million Filip Helander - involved a seven-figure transfer fee.

Celtic have splashed out £7million on defender Christopher Jullien among three signings and are closing in on a £2million deal for Hapoel Beer Sheva defender Hatem Abd Elhamed.
