Dean Kiely succeeds Alan Kelly as Ireland goalkeeping coach

Dean Kiely has succeeded Alan Kelly as the Republic of Ireland’s new goalkeeping coach.

Capped 11 times, Kiely joins Stephen Kenny’s backroom team ahead of the World Cup qualifying campaign in March.

But the Ireland boss has yet to settle on Damien Duff’s replacement as first-team coach with Mark Kennedy among the front runners.

While Duff’s departure from the coaching staff was a shock, Kelly’s exit was less of a surprise.

He was known to be unhappy with elements of the Wembley gate video and speech delivered by Kenny before the England game.

But he furiously denied leaking the story to a British newspaper and Kenny claimed at the time that Kelly would be staying on.

But that all changed a fortnight ago with Kenny forced to look elsewhere for a goalkeeping coach.

Kiely, 50, will continue to work as Crystal Palace’s goalkeeping coach and join the Irish team for international windows.

"It was a tremendous honour to represent Ireland as a player,” said Kiely in an FAI statement today.

“Now, to get the opportunity to represent my country as a coach, it brings up exactly the same emotions.

"I've always watched from afar as a fan and I really believe there are exciting times ahead in Irish football.

“We've got a real blend of experience and young players with potential coming into the squad.

“It’s something I'm desperate to be a part of and I'm already looking forward to the qualifiers in March."

Ireland boss Kenny said: “Dean has had an exceptional career both as a goalkeeper and a coach.

“He has been coaching international goalkeepers in the Premier League for many seasons now.

"His sheer enthusiasm and his sense of pride at the prospect of representing Ireland is very uplifting.

“The current crop of talented goalkeepers in the squad will benefit from his expertise and experience.”

Kiely won 11 Ireland caps between 1999 and 2008 and was part of Mick McCarthy’s World Cup squad in 2002.

He was a stalwart for Charlton Athletic over seven years and also played for West Brom, Bury and York City, Portsmouth and Coventry.
