Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest transfer twist as Man Utd 'back out' of agreement

David de Gea reportedly signed a contract extension at Manchester United before the club pulled out, with Dean Henderson described as a "potential avenue" to becoming their new No 1.

Henderson impressed during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season having made important saves for the Reds earlier in the campaign before picking up a season-ending injury in January.

It is his performances in the first few months of the 2022/23 season which have led the club to try and sign him this summer, as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department. Wayne Hennessey is currently the Reds' only senior keeper, although they do still have Ethan Horvath on their books but his future remains unclear.

And surprising developments have emerged over the future of Man United's current No 1 David de Gea. The Spaniard's contract expires at the end of June and he is yet to agree a new deal at Old Trafford.

The Athletic claim that the Spaniard had agreed fresh terms with the Red Devils which would see his salary reduced, only for United to back out on signing the contract. It is claimed that they will now submit "a new proposal" with "an even lower salary."

The news could significantly affect Forest if De Gea fails to agree a new deal and leaves United as it is also claimed that a "potential avenue" for the Red Devils is to bring Henderson back and install him as their new first choice keeper.

However, the Athletic have also reported that United have made contact with alternative keeper options including Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana.

There are also question marks over Henderson's relationship with United and manager Erik ten Hag after one report claimed that he has had "an uneasy couple of years with his parent club."

It is also claimed "there is next to no indication he is under consideration for a promotion to No.1," which would surely signal an end to his time at Old Trafford, although this may still depend on the future of De Gea.

Should Forest be concerned that United may choose to keep Henderson? Have your say
