Dean Henderson signs long-term Manchester United contract amid Chelsea transfer links

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has penned a new long-term deal with the club amid reported transfer interest from Chelsea.

The stopper has excelled in the past two seasons on loan with Sheffield United, helping the Blades win promotion to the Premier League and then fight for a European spot last term.

That has seen his stock rise significantly, as he battles for the England first-choice role ahead of next summer's delayed European Championships, and led to speculation around his future.

United have always rated Henderson highly but they have David de Gea firmly established as their number one, which led to suggestions of a potential exit.

Chelsea, in their hunt to find a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, were among the clubs attributed with an interested in signing the 23-year-old.

However, United have announced that Henderson has penned a long-term contract running until 2025 and he will now compete with De Gea for a starting berth.

Speaking to the club's official website, he said: “The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that.

"The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group.

"The faith that the Manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

"I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club. Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead."
