Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson faces a difficult conundrum as he waits to become the first choice at Old Trafford, according to club legend Roy Keane.
Henderson made his first league appearance for United on Sunday when he replaced the injured David de Gea against Southampton.
The 23-year-old made some important saves to prevent the Saints from extending their lead and it proved to be significant as United fought back from 2-0 down to win in the last minute.
If De Gea is unable to prove his fitness before Wednesday, Henderson is line to start against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Henderson believes he is the heir to De Gea's throne but a loan move in January was thought to be under consideration as he looks to gain more experience and cement a place in England's squad for the European Championships next summer.
But Keane believes Henderson faces a tricky decision to decide his next decision.
"It’s a nightmare scenario for him," Keane told Sky Sports.
"He wants to play for Man United, of course he does.
"Being in goal for Sheffield United and Man United every week is completely different, but he had to go back. Ole wanted to see him and work with him closely.
"You want to get better by playing the games, you can do all the training sessions you want, but if you’re not playing every week, the kid’s gonna go backwards - and that’s gonna cost him, ultimately.
"For example, if Pickford has a difficult spell - which he always seems to be, in my eyes - then it’s probably difficult for Gareth to go and pick a goalkeeper who’s not playing regularly.
"It’s a difficult situation for Henderson. Come January, do United really wanna let him go out on loan?
"I don’t think so, because then they need cover for De Gea in case something happens to him."
