Dean Henderson has withdrawn from England’s Euro 2020 squad because of a hip injury and been replaced by the Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Football Association said Henderson had “a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament” and that he was returning to Manchester United for assessment and treatment.

Uefa regulations allow a goalkeeper to be replaced on medical grounds at any stage. Ramsdale was in the provisional squad named by Gareth Southgate but did not make the final 26.

On Tuesday Jack Grealish trained away from the main group in the buildup to Friday’s game against Scotland. It is understood the 25-year-old did an individualised programme indoors as he continues to build full fitness after the shin injury that laid him low for three months.

Grealish and Henderson were among the unused substitutes for England’s opening game against Croatia, which was decided by a Raheem Sterling goal. Sterling has revealed his mother was a little too quick to call him afterwards.

“Directly after the game, my mum first went on calling my phone when I was still in the dressing room,” he told the Official England Podcast. “I was like: ‘Listen, I haven’t got time at the minute, I’ll call you back when I’m on the bus.’

“When I’m in the dressing room, I’m getting a massage I can’t be FaceTiming my mum at that point. I spoke to her for a little bit and of course friends and my missus and some really nice messages.”

Sterling sees room for improvement. “I think we could have kept the ball a bit better, I think we could have played out from the back a bit more because when you come up against France and Spain, teams like that, we can’t just give them back the ball because it will be a long time before we get the ball back,” he said.
