England’s Dean Henderson is out of Euro 2020 with a hip injury.
The Manchester United goalkeeper was forced to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s squad, with Aaron Ramsdale of Sheffield United replacing him.
Three Lions medics determined Henderson would struggle to take part in training for the remainder of the tournament, prompting the decision for him to pull out.
Under Uefa regulations, nations are permitted to replace goalkeepers on medical grounds at any stage of the competition.
The news is a major blow to Henderson, who forced his way into United’s first team last season and is bidding to permanently displace David de Gea at Old Trafford next term.
But it is also a serious concern for Gareth Southgate, who already lost the services of the experienced Nick Pope to a knee injury before Euro 2020.
Henderson will now return to United for further assessment and undergo rehabilitation that it is hoped will see him fit for the start of the new domestic season in August.
Ramsdale is yet to join up with the rest of the England squad at their St George’s Park headquarters.
He was originally a member of Southgate’s 33-man pre-tournament group in Middlesbrough having played at this year’s Under-21 Euros in Slovenia in March.
The Blades ‘keeper, a 2017 U19 Euros winner, will have to undergo standard Covid-19 testing protocol before entering the camp.
West Brom’s Sam Johnstone is the other goalkeeper in Southgate’s squad and, like Henderson, was on the bench as back-up to no1 Jordan Pickford for the 1-0 win over Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.
