Dean Clancy honours grandfather at grave after winning European Games bronze medal

Dean Clancy honoured his recently deceased grandfather by taking the bronze medal that he won at the European Games to his grave.

Tony White, Clancy’s grandfather, passed away last Saturday with Dean only learning the news after his first-round win over Malik Hasanov the following morning.

The 21-year-old showed tremendous resolve to win his quarter-final fight and qualify for the Olympic Games on the same day that his Grandfather was laid to rest.

With his medal in tow, Clancy posted a touching image of his medal draped around the headstone of his grandfather as he paid his respects to one of his biggest supporters.

Clancy captioned the image “Forever in my corner.”

After securing qualification to next year’s Paris Games with his bronze medal win in Krakow, Clancy paid tribute to his Grandfather who he said was one of his biggest supporters.

"I just want to dedicate that fight to my Grandad who passed away on Saturday,” said Clancy after his win last Monday.

“He's been laid to rest today. That was for him. He's looking down happy. He was a massive supporter of mine."
