Dean Ashton makes big West Ham statement amid David Moyes verdict after Man City Carabao Cup tie

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton has hailed his old side knocking out Manchester City of the Carabao Cup as a "massive result" for the club and the competition.

The Hammers became the first side to defeat Pep Guardiola's side in the competition in almost five years, with Manchester City having won the Carabao Cup in each of the last four seasons.

It was a hard-fought contest at the London Stadium, with West Ham battling to a goalless draw in normal time, before winning 5-3 on penalties after Phil Foden had missed for the visitors.

As a result, West Ham are through to the quarter-finals of the competition, where they are joined by London rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Brentford, along with Leicester City, Liverpool and League One side Sunderland.

And Ashton has heaped praise on his old side and manager David Moyes, who has guided West Ham past Manchester United and now City in the last two rounds of the competition.

"Very impressed with the way David Moyes set his team up, he made changes and rested some of his best players, but it is almost like a mindset now at West Ham that whoever comes in, they do their job," the former Hammers striker said, speaking on the Carabao Cup highlights show on Quest.

"If you are West Ham, there is only really one way you can play against Manchester City, which is what they did, they sat deep and tried to be difficult to break down and then try to counter attack.

"But they deserved to take Manchester City to penalties with that performance."

Meanwhile, Ashton believes that the Hammers must be considered as contenders to lift the trophy for the first time, having already beaten Manchester United and Manchester City so far.

And with the Hammers sitting fourth in the Premier League and top of their group in the Europa League, Ashton says these are exciting times for the club's supporters.

"What a massive result this is for West Ham and the competition as well," he said.

"And for David Moyes to have beaten both Manchester clubs in the last two rounds, and not concede a goal, that is impressive.

"West Ham will have a fantastic chance now with the teams they have beaten in the last two rounds, and it would be incredible if they could win a trophy for those fans."
