Dealing with typhoon garbage speeding up

As Sunday marked three months since Typhoon No. 19 landed, wreaking widespread damage mainly to eastern Japan, the removal of the storm debris has been progressing at a fast pace in areas hit hard by flooding from rivers and heavy rain.

In Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, disaster debris removal from 564 temporary garbage pickup points to five suburban makeshift collection sites have been completed by the end of last year.

At the makeshift sites, flood-damaged refrigerators, washing machines, furniture and other debris items are piled up. About 20 workers were still processing and sorting the disaster garbage on Sunday for removal to processing plants.
