Dealer pulled over by police in the Lakes admitted smoking a joint - when they asked to search his car he ran away

A Wigan dealer was caught with drugs, money and a “check list” after being pulled over by police in a Lake District town.

Billy Smith, 26, was pulled over by police near Ambleside and admitted smoking a joint but ran away when officers asked to search the car he was driving.

Officers found drugs and mobile phones in the car.

Smith, from Atherton in Wigan, was found four hours later in a nearby Lakeland village in possession of a “check list” and cash.

He has now been jailed in Cumbria for drug supply offences.

Smith was driving along the A591 near Ambleside at around 10:30pm on February 24, 2019 when he was stopped by officers, Cumbria Police says.

While at the roadside he admitted to smoking a cannabis joint.

When the officers told him they were going to search his vehicle, he ran off.

Mobile phones and a “quantity of controlled drugs” were found in his car.

Smith was later found several miles away in the village of Ings, at 2.30am.

He was arrested and following a search, officers found a check list and sum of money in his wallet.

Smith, of Lodge Road, Atherton, Wigan, has now been jailed for two years and six months.

He was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court last Thursday (August 6).

Smith was convicted of possession with intent to supply cocaine and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class B.

Detective Constable Andrew Wright, of Cumbria Police, said drug dealing will not be tolerated in the county.

“Cumbria Constabulary is committed to pursuing anyone and everyone connected to the supply of drugs in the county," he said.

"Today’s result shows the consequences that await those who are caught being involved in dealing drugs."
