Deal or no deal? Newcastle United fans' verdict on the futures of Carroll, Gayle and Schar

Newcastle United fans have given their verdict on the futures of Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Fabian Schar.

The trio are all currently set to depart Tyneside in the summer at the end of their current contracts.

The Magpies have taken steps in recent months to tie down the likes of Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez to new deals, and the club's hierarchy have decisions to make on the future of a number of first-team stars.

However, a ChronicleLive poll asking whether United should offer new contracts to the trio delivered definitive verdicts.

Andy Carroll

Newcastle supporters believe the time has come for the club to bring Carroll's second spell at St James' Park to an end, with 80% of fans calling for the club to release the Academy graduate.

The 32-year-old started the season as Callum Wilson's strike partner, and featured in the recent defeats at Arsenal and Aston Villa.

However, Carroll has netted just once since his return in the summer of 2019 and has again been dogged by a number of injury concerns throughout his second spell.

Dwight Gayle

Magpies fans also believe it is time for the club to release another former number nine, with 69% of supporters voting against Gayle being offered a new deal.

The striker has struggled for game-time so far this season following an injury suffered in pre-season.

Gayle made a goalscoring return as a substitute against West Brom in December, but has been restricted to cameo appearances from the bench since.

Fabian Schar

United fans are keen to see the Swiss international remain on Tyneside, with 87% of fans urging the club to offer a new deal.

However, the poll was shared before the victory over Southampton which saw the 29-year-old sustain a knee injury which could require an operation.

The club are understood to be considering exercising an option to extend Schar's contract by a year, and there's still a chance the defender could feature for the Magpies before the end of the season.
