Deaf bank worker in £22K signing grant fraud

Dominic Olanya leaving Croydon Crown Court

A deaf Lloyds Bank apprentice pocketed £22,700 in public funds meant for sign language services, a court heard.

Dominic Olanya, 32, was given a Department for Work and Pensions Access to Work grant to help him in his job.

But Olanya, above, of Hammersmith, did not pay for the sign language interpreters and instead spent the money on Apple products and his daily living, Croydon crown court was told.

Olanya admitted benefit fraud and was sentenced last week to eight months in prison suspended for 18 months.

Judge Elizabeth Smaller also ordered him to complete 50 hours of community service and pay the DWP £500 compensation.
