Deadly stun gun recovered by police after VW Golf crashes outside Altrincham fire station

Police recovered a potentially deadly stun gun after a speeding car crashed near a fire station.

The weapon was found inside after the occupants of the Volkswagen Golf got out and ran away.

The gun - and the car - have now been sent away for forensic testing.

It's understood no arrests have been made.

Police said the crash happened outside Altrincham fire station in Trafford after a short police pursuit, which began in Altrincham town centre in the early hours of Sunday.

GMP Trafford South posted details of the incident on Facebook and an image of the damaged silver Golf.

Police said an inspector was on routine patrol in Altrincham town centre when he saw the Golf travelling at speed in the direction of Hale Road.

He attempted to stop the car but it drove away before crashing.

Firefighters ran outside to help.

Police said: "The vehicle continued at high speed and a short time later crashed outside the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service building in Altrincham.

"Big thanks to the firefighters who helped.

"The fire service quickly went outside and assisted police to secure the vehicle, who's occupants had run off.

"On a search of the car a stun gun was located in the passenger side. Both car and firearm have been recovered for a forensic examination."

There were no reports of any injuries.

No further details have been released.
