Deadly storms, suspected tornadoes hit South, move east

Powerful storms brought hail, gusty winds and suspected tornadoes to communities in the South, killing at least 8 people — including 3 children — before moving northeast and toward parts of the Midwest this weekend.


The latest: The National Weather Service issued thunderstorm and tornado warnings and watches early Monday for communities in New York — including New York City — Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Details: Chicago airports canceled over 1,000 flights Sunday after the storm brought heavy snow to the city.

  • Almost 90,000 customers were without power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and Arkansas, www.poweroutage.us estimated around lunchtime Sunday, after powerful storms and twisters were reported through the night, damaging property in their wake.
  • Robertson County Sheriff's Office said a tornado in Franklin, Texas, injured several people and damaged homes in the area. "A preliminary damage survey in Robertson County has found a tornado with peak intensity of EF-3 and winds of 140 MPH," NWS Fort Worth tweeted.
  • Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency for affected areas Saturday evening, as the the severe weather moved through the state.
  • The NWS Memphis said preliminary results indicated an EF 2 tornado in Hamilton, Mississippi, with winds around 130 mph. "Still investigating another tornado track in northern Monroe Co. near Greenwood Springs MS with EF 1 damage with winds 95 to 100 mph," it said.
  • The Angelina County Sheriff's Department in Texas said Saturday an 8- and 3-year-old died when a tree fell on a car, trapping them inside.
  • A woman died in a weather-related incident involving debris near Weches in Houston County, the sheriff’s office said Saturday, according to NBC.
  • In Louisiana, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office said Saturday the drowning death of a boy, 13, was linked to severe weather in Louisiana, Knoe8 reports.

What's next? The NWS said a renewed risk of severe storms was looking more likely from the eastern Plains Wednesday to the East Coast Friday.
