Could Israel really face the spectre of civil war? After the tension that erupted in East Jerusalem and now the potential of a ground war with Gaza, Arab Israelis and hardline Jews have clashed openly, with motorists beaten unconscious, a pregnant woman sent to hospital and a synagogue torched. Both the country's president and the mayor of the flashpoint town of Lod near Tel Aviv have even used the term "civil war".
After Israel's fourth snap election in two years, Arab Israelis, who make up more than 20 percent of the electorate, suddenly emerged as kingmakers. Where does the current crisis leave Israeli politics?
And where does it leave Arab citizens, who have generally kept a low profile in previous crises of this magnitude? What consequences could there be if what started out as a standoff over the expulsion of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem continues to spiral?
