Deadly Greece wildfires rage for fifth day as thousands are evacuated

  • Hundreds of Greek firefighters , supported by international reinforcements and water-bombing aircraft, are continuing to battle multiple wildfires near Athens for a fifth consecutive day, with strong winds significantly hindering containment efforts.
  • The blazes have already consumed over 60 hectares of land across four separate wildfires, causing extensive damage to homes, pine forests, olive groves and farmland, particularly west of the capital in the Gulf of Corinth.
  • More than 1,000 individuals have been evacuated from affected areas, including the seaside resort of Porto Germeno, with over 250 people rescued by boats from beaches.
  • The wildfires have tragically resulted in the deaths of three firefighters in separate incidents, including two who perished in a helicopter crash near Psatha after a mid-air collision.
  • Authorities have attributed one of the blazes to a faulty power line from a wind farm, leading to the arrest of two contractors on charges of negligent arson.
