
OSAKA -- Fourteen people have died since mid-April at a nursing home in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture, where at least 61 residents and staff members were infected with the novel coronavirus, according to the city government and other sources.
The COVID-19 death toll is equivalent to over one third of the facility's elderly residents, which has a maximum occupancy of 44 beds.
According to sources close to the city government, two residents developed fevers and returned positive PCR tests on April 11. Infections continued to spread throughout the facility, with 39 residents and 22 staff members confirmed to have contracted the virus.
Included among the 14 fatalities were residents who had passed away at the nursing home after being unable to find a hospital willing to provide treatment, the sources said.

A cluster of coronavirus infections has also occurred at an elderly care facility in Nagata Ward, Kobe, leaving more than 100 people, including residents, infected with the virus, it has been learned.
The cluster has resulted in more than 10 deaths. According to sources, many of the infected recuperated on the facility's premises.
