Deadline to claim £150 council tax rebate extended - as 300,000 households missing out

The Government has extended its deadline for households to get their £150 council tax rebate until November 30.

It is estimated that 300,000 eligible homes still haven't claimed the money available to them.

As part of the rebate scheme, households in council tax bands A to D in England, Scotland and Wales are eligible for £150.

The majority of homes, around 19.1million, have received their payment already, reports Moneysavingexpert.com.

Anyone who pays their council tax by direct debit, will have been automatically paid, but those who don't have to contact the council to claim their payment.

There are no plans for further extensions, so make sure you get your claim in on time.

Making your claim

Different councils are providing different ways of paying out the £150.

The most common way is to complete a form online and then get the amount paid into your bank account.

The form allows you to fill in your details, including your bank account, safely and the £150 will then be paid into your bank account.

Sometimes you will be asked to give a unique code that will probably have been sent to you by your council in a letter.

According to moneysavingexpert.com, 46 councils have said they will send households a letter in the post containing a unique barcode that you can take to any post office branch to receive the £150.

Meanwhile nine councils in England and Wales said they would apply the £150 credit to the council tax accounts of any eligible households.

So if a household owes council tax, £150 will be taken off their bill. But you may still be allowed to receive your rebate as cash if you'd prefer, so it's worth contacting your council to ask.

Three councils in England and Wales said it would send £150 cheques to any eligible household that doesn't pay by direct debit.

The rebate is open to any households whose property falls into council tax bands A to D (PA)

In Scotland councils said they would deduct £150 off households' council tax bills either from one bill or across the year.

MoneySavingExpert looked at the websites of all 332 councils across England and Wales to see how they were paying out their rebates. You can see their results here.

If you are not sure who your local council is, you can input your postcode on the Government website to find out.

If your property is not eligible

For anyone whose property does not fall into bands A to D and you are struggling to cover housing costs, there may still be cash available to you through the Government's discretionary housing fund.

You apply for the fund through your local authority but you can find more information on the government's website.
