Deadline set for Celtic and Rangers Colts reconstruction plan as SPFL clubs to decide on controversial proposal

SPFL clubs have been set a deadline to signal their support or opposition to recent league proposals concerning Rangers and Celtic Colts teams.

The two B teams are set to take part in this coming season's Lowland League, an idea that was met with some opposition in various areas of the Scottish pyramid but ultimately passed.

However this week brought the news that a separate reform, in effect from the 2022-23 season, could automatically promote the two Colts sides to the SPFL, starting at the League Two level.

It's likely to have it's supporters but also very vocal critics who will be aghast that the Lowland 'pilot' next season has turned out to be a precursor to further advance the position.

Clubs will have until July 7 to signal whether they're behind the idea or not but there's understood to be many critics, according to the Daily Mail's Stephen McGowan, including in the Scottish Premiership.

A number of league reconstruction proposals were booted out during the Covid shutdown last spring.

Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer proposed an expanded format that would have promoted Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers and avoided the trio's unfortunate relegation with games still to play.
