Deadline set for 'Black Bitch' pub name change as campaigners oppose one suggested alternative

Owners of a pub at the centre of a racism row have set a deadline for picking its new name.

Bosses want to rename the historic Black Bitch pub over claims its name is offensive.

Campaigners have opposed plans by Greene King to relaunch the bar as the Black Hound.

The chain’s managing director Wayne Shurvinton has written to community groups in Linlithgow, West Lothian, asking for feedback by January 24.

More than 11,300 people have called for a halt to the plans because the title has featured on the Royal Burgh’s coat of arms for centuries and stems from a legend which protesters say has nothing to do with racism.

Shurvinton said: “After considering people’s responses, we have decided to also seek views on whether people would prefer to see a different name to The Black Hound instead.”

Alternative names being considered include The Wearie Drover and The Linlithgow Arms.

A Greene King spokesman said: “We know our announcement hasn’t been welcomed by all, which is why we have said we’re happy to discuss various options for the new name.”
