Deadline nears for bungalow award nominations

Oct. 08--Bungalow residents have until Nov. 2 to submit nominations for the 11th annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow Awards.

Created by the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association with the support of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, these awards honor the creativity and efforts of owners of Chicago's unique historic bungalows for the work they've done in interior and exterior renovations, landscaping and restoration.

Nominations can be received from an owner for their own home or bungalows can be nominated by a neighbor, friend or neighborhood association. Nominated projects can be whole homes, single rooms or small projects and will be judged by a panel of architects, preservation experts and civic leaders. On-site viewing of the finalists' bungalows will be conducted Nov. 13 and 14.

Projects that have been completed in the last five years will be considered.

Awards will be given in six categories:

--Interior restoration that accurately recovers the details and forms of the Chicago bungalow.

--Interior rehabilitation that demonstrates a contemporary use of space while maintaining the integrity and distinctive features of the structure.

--Exterior rehabilitation that is consistent with the lines and look of the particular bungalow and those around it.

--Green project that demonstrates the use of energy-efficient design and renovation while maintaining classic features.

--Small project that preserves historic detail and form while improving one aspect of a room or the exterior at a cost of $5,000 or less.

--Landscape design that demonstrates a creative design solution and enhances the bungalow's architecture and overall visual impression of landscaped space.

"For many Chicagoans, a bungalow is the first house and the only house they have ever owned," said businessman and philanthropist Richard Driehaus. "For those of us who were raised in one, the bungalow will always occupy a special place in our hearts."

The first-place winner in each category will be awarded $1,000 and a handcrafted bronze Historic Chicago Bungalow Association plaque.

Nominations can be submitted at chicagobungalow.org or mailed to Historic Chicago Bungalow Association, 53 W. Jackson Blvd., Suite 1125, Chicago, IL 60604. Submissions must include three to five before and after photographs of the project.
