Deadline looms for Leaving Certs as they have to decide whether to sit exams during COVID pandemic

The deadline is looming for Leaving Certificate students as they only less than a week to decide if they want to sit traditional exams during the pandemic.

Students have until the 16 March to determine if they want to go ahead with the original state exams or if they would prefer predicted grades from the State Examinations Commission (SEC), or they can opt for both options.

The Leaving Certificate 2021 candidate portal opens at 10am this morning and students must enter their subjects and confirm how they wish to be assessed.

The Minister for Education Norma Foley said: “I would encourage all students, when creating their account on the portal, to examine carefully the options available to them in sitting the written examinations and receiving the SEC Accredited Grades.

“It is also important that students continue to engage with the in-person learning and assessment process which provides further data for teachers to draw from in the process of estimating marks.”

Students will still have the option to withdraw their application to sit traditional exams through the portal in late April or early May.

The Accredited Grades are to be based on estimated marks provided by schools and a national standardisation process.

And any student who opts for both options will automatically receive the higher grade in each subject.

The 2021 Leaving Certificate Examinations will take place from June 9 to 29.

The Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations begin on the same date and finish on the 17th of the same month.
