Dead whale washes up on popular beach

A dead whale has washed up on a popular beach in North Wales.

The animal, identified as a Sowerby's beaked whale, washed ashore on Rhos-on-Sea beach on Wednesday, November 10.

Initial reports said the animal was a dolphin at first, however it has since been confirmed to be a whale by experts at the scene, NorthWalesLive reported.

Coastguard officers from Llandudno are on the scene alongside the British Divers Marine Life Rescue while the animal is examined before being recovered from the scene.

The coastguard said the whale, which is thought to be 'not fully grown' and a female, is dead.

The animals is three and a half metres long.

According to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue website, Sowerby's are rarely seen so close to the land edge as they favour offshore waters to the west of the UK and Ireland.
