Dead People's Skin Is The Latest Anti-Aging Beauty Craze And It Could Soon Come to the US

A controversial anti-aging injectable made from donated human skin tissue is gaining attention in South Korea, where the treatment is marketed as a way to improve skin texture and elasticity.

The injectable, known as Elravie Re2O, is made using skin recovered from deceased donors. The tissue is processed to remove cells and genetic material, leaving behind a collagen- and elastin-rich framework known as the extracellular matrix (ECM), which is purified and formulated into tiny particles for injection.

The treatment is already being offered by some US providers despite not being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Its South Korean manufacturer, L&C Bio Co., has said it hopes to officially bring Re20 to the US market in 2027.

The Skin Scaffold Behind the Treatment

Unlike some popular injectable skin treatments that aim to stimulate the body's own production of collagen and elastin, Re2O is designed to provide a structural scaffold that may support the skin's natural regenerative processes.

The product begins with donated human skin that undergoes extensive processing to remove cellular material. The remaining extracellular matrix retains structural proteins such as collagen and elastin while reducing the risk of immune rejection.

The concept is rooted in regenerative medicine, where processed human tissue matrices have been used to support tissue repair. But using the technology as an aesthetic injectable is a newer application, and the evidence supporting its anti-aging claims remains limited.

Early Results Come With Major Caveats

Preliminary research has reported improvements in measures including skin density, elasticity, hydration, wrinkles, and pore appearance after treatment.

However, experts caution that the evidence is still early. The study cited in coverage of Re2O followed a relatively small group of participants for only about 20 weeks, and researchers involved in the product's development were among those conducting the work.

That means longer, larger independent studies will be needed to determine the treatment's effectiveness over time and to better establish its safety profile.

Dr. Eunice Park, a dual board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, told Women's Wear Daily that patients considering any medical procedure should consult a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist and understand the potential risks and benefits.

US Interest Is Growing Before FDA Approval

Re2O is currently available in South Korea, Singapore, and Japan, while some US med spas are reportedly already offering it.

The treatment's regulatory status is likely to become a larger issue if the company moves forward with plans for a US launch. Re2O is not currently FDA-approved for use in the United States.

Treatments and products featuring exosomes, growth factors, and PDRN have also seen a surge in interest, particularly in the rapidly expanding South Korean beauty market. However, regulatory oversight varies significantly depending on the product and its use.

In the US, the FDA has warned that products marketed as regenerative medicine therapies may pose risks and should not be assumed safe or effective simply because they are promoted as cutting-edge treatments.

Ethical Questions Behind the Beauty Trend

The use of donated human tissue also raises questions that go beyond efficacy and side effects.

The tissue used to make Re2O reportedly comes from deceased donors who have consented to donation. But South Korea has faced growing debate over how human tissue-based products should be regulated, particularly as more commercial products enter the market.

Experts have argued that existing oversight may focus heavily on infection prevention and contamination control, yet may not always align with the extensive clinical testing requirements applied to conventional drugs and medical devices.

As Re2O moves closer to the US market, dermatologists, regulators and patients will face a more complicated question: whether a treatment built from donated human skin can prove its anti-aging promise while meeting the safety, ethical and regulatory standards expected of a medical procedure.
