'Dead man used in ploy to collect pension money' at Irish post office

Gardai are investigating "all the circumstances" surrounding the discovery of a man's body in an Irish post office earlier today.

The elderly man was found dead in the Carlow town area on Friday morning.

His death is being treated as "unexplained" and the services of the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of the State Pathologist have been sought.

It is understood that the man was found by staff of a post office in Carlow town.

Two men allegedly brought the man into the premises in order to collect his pension.

However, it is understood the elderly man had already passed away at this stage and was being held up by the two men.

It is believed that the men were attempting to pretend he was still alive by dressing him in a coat and mask.

Post office staff expressed their concern over the man's wellbeing and proceeded to contact gardai.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly male in the Carlow area this morning, Friday 21st January 2022.

"The services of the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested.

"A post mortem will be conducted by the Office of the State Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.

"No further information is available at this time."
