Dead man in face mask lies on empty street as China's killer coronavirus worsens

A man wearing a face mask lies dead on the pavement in Wuhan City, China, after succumbing to coronavirus.

In the poignant image, medics in protective suits are among the few people near one of the latest victims.

The man in his 60s lay straight on his back in front of a closed furniture store in the city, in which 11 million people are under quarantine.

The body was soon shrouded in a blue blanket and taken away.

Police quickly stacked cardboard supermarket boxes to hide the scene.

"It's terrible. These days many people have died," one woman, who lives nearby, said.

Wuhan is the epicentre of the outbreak of the new coronavirus, which is believed to have jumped from wild animals at a city market into humans.

The virus, which emerged late last year, has claimed at least 213 lives and infected thousands in China, with at least 159 deaths in Wuhan alone.

With the virus spreading to other countries, the World Health Organization has declared the crisis a global health emergency.

Two cases have been confirmed in the UK already.

A convoy of Brits potentially carrying the coronavirus arrived at an NHS hospital yesterday for 14 days in quarantine.

The 83 passengers, who were rescued from Wuhan, China, have just reached Arrowe Park Hospital, in Wirral.

They were flown home and taken by bus from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, to the hospital.

James Convey, one of the passengers, told Sky News: "It was quite a positive atmosphere to be honest, everyone was relieved to get out of China.

"We’re all very relieved to be back in the UK. It was a very tight turnaround. We had about 1.5 hours’ notice to get to Wuhan airport, all the transport was locked down, the roads were closed.

"Amazingly we did get there on time. I think there’s probably a lot of people who didn’t."
