Dead dog found 'tied to tree' at site of former Scots coal mine

An appeal has been launched over the mystery of a dead dog found apparently tied to a tree in a former Fife coal mine.

A local made the grim discovery of the remains of the animal yesterday at St Ninian's open cast mine near Dunfermline.

It's hoped the distinctive Barkley and Fetch collar may hold clues to tracing the owner.

The dog's hair is light brown and it is thought that the dog may have been a lurcher or saluki cross.

Lost Dogs Scotland Facebook page posted on social media in a bid to find the dog's owner.

The post read: "The remains of a dog has been found In Fife in a secluded place at St Ninans open cast mining area.

"It looks like the dog has been tied to a tree as the collar is attached to the tree. Image of collar below.

"Does anyone know of a missing dog from some time ago wearing this distinctive collar by Barkley and Fetch? The remains are a light brown colour."

Police Scotland and the Scottish SPCA said they could find no reports of the incident being brought to their attention.
