Police have launched an investigation after a man's body was found in a wheelie bin behind a Waitrose supermarket in north London.

Photos posted on social media show a blue and white forensic tent at the scene in Tollington Road, Islington, after the discovery was made on Saturday afternoon.

Officers were called to the road, a short distance from the Emirates Stadium and Holloway Road Tube station, just before 4pm.

A crime scene remained in place on Sunday morning.

The death is being treated as unexplained, a Met Police spokeswoman said.

She told the Standard: “Police were called to Tollington Road, Islington, shortly before 4pm on Saturday to reports of a man's body found in a wheelie bin. Officers attended.

"Road closures have been put in place at the scene.

“Detectives are working to establish the man's identity.

“At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained."
