Red Bull go one-two in Sydney Supercars

Shane Van Gisbergen can all but taste his second career Supercars championship after navigating through the field on the way to his 54th career race win, and his 14th in 2021.

The Red Bull Ampol driver was made to work hard on Saturday, slow off the blocks before being double stacked in the pits on lap seven when Macauley Jones' engine problem forced the safety car out.

All drivers entered the pits, with both Red Bull's opting to switch from their super soft compound tyres to hard's and Van Gisbergen rejoining the field in ninth after waiting 12 seconds for his teammate to complete his first stop.

The series leader now has a 349 point lead ahead of Jamie Whincup in second, and needs only to keep it above 350 following Sunday's race to secure the championship.

"I though it (the race) was done once we'd used the soft's but that was awesome with a second lease of life on them, and Jamie let me through which was really nice of him -makes up for last week," Van Gisbergen told Fox Sports.

"We lack a bit in qualifying but in the races, our car's a jet. So thanks to them (the team), hopefully finish it off tomorrow."

The Red Bull pair chose to work together in Saturday's 250km endurance race, after going wheel-to-wheel last Sunday that almost cost them both a podium.

But when rain hit the track with just 16 laps remaining their re-used super soft compounds paid dividends as both Van Gisbergen and Whincup were able to chase down Brodie Kostecki, Will Brown and finally Cameron Waters on their way to a one-two finish.

Attempting to hold off the rampaging Bulls, Waters said he was happy with the result for his team, but thought they could've snagged a victory had the weather held off.

"When the rain come I knew I was going to struggle a little bit with them on the super softs but I've kind of forgotten what this feels like - we've had such a tough run here at SMP (Sydney Motorsport Park)," Waters said after his first podium finish since race 19.

"Massive credit to all the guys they've pushed through the whole time, when we've been down this hill - got back up and gave me the best car they could give me.

"Would've been nice to give them a P1, but podium feels like a win."

Pole holder Anton De Pasquale could only manage fourth in a difficult race for Shell V-Power, with Chaz Mostert rounding out the top five.

The penultimate race of the season gets underway at 3.15pm (AEDT) on Sunday before the season wraps up at Bathurst early December.
