De Minaur's path to Aus Open clear in United Cup draw

Alex De Minaur will begin his Australian Open preparations against two current top-20 players, after the hosts were drawn against Norway and the Czech Republic in the United Cup.

De Minaur was on Monday handed home-city advantage in Sydney for January's teams event, alongside Australia's rising teenage women's star Maya Joint.

Fellow seeds Canada and Germany also on Australia's side of the draw in Sydney, while defending-champions USA headline the contingent of teams headed to Perth.

Australia's grouping means world No.7 de Minaur is set to face Norway's Casper Ruud and Czech Jakub Mensik in the group stage.

Both players currently sit in the world's top 20, in a situation labelled as ideal by Australia's former Davis Cup captain Wally Masur.

"He is a player who thrives on matches and getting them under the belt," Masur said.

"Just building that confidence so you can play at a subconscious level.

"He seems to hit a certain level of player, and it's the very best of the world and that is the little gap he has to bridge."

De Minaur is not alone in that situation, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both having more than double the rankings points than any other male on the tour.

Yet to reach the final four of a grand slam, de Minaur reached the semi-finals of the ATP finals for the first time last week after beating Taylor Fritz in the round robin.

"There's not a lot missing. In tennis there are no weight divisions. Demon has worked really hard on his physicality over the years," Masur said.

"It's not like he is a player who can rely on easy power or a big serve to stay in it. Everything has to be in-sync. If he is 10 per cent off, it is going to hurt him.

"He's got to throw everything he's got at every match.

"But he's just knocking on the door. If you keep knocking on the door and working as hard as he works ... He will get his chance."

Meanwhile Joint's United Cup debut comes after a year where she began at No.119 and is now Australia's top-ranked woman at No.32.

The 19-year-old will clash with Czech Republic's former French and Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, and lowly-ranked Norweigen Malene Helgo.

"The rise is incredible," Australia's former world.No.4 Jelena Dokic said.

"I don't think she shies away from pressure and expectation. She knows it is coming, she has talked about it now.

"It's not a bad thing to be thrown into that pressure and expectation straight away. The more you're in that environment, the better."
