High school students at De La Institute in Bronzeville wrapped up a weekslong food drive Friday by loading hundreds of pounds worth of canned goods and other items onto a bus bound for a local food pantry.
About 50 students helped load a 14-passenger bus that delivered the food to a nearby food pantry at St. James Catholic Church, 2912 S. Wabash Ave.
“I think it shows us that our kids understand that we’re here for more than just education,” De La Salle Principal Tom Schergen said. “Our students have grasped that there are people out there who need a lot of help at this point, and they feel great that they can help other people out.”
Schergen said one of the school’s missions is to serve others. “This shows us they’ve bought in to those values,” he said.
The food drive comes on the heels of another student-lead food drive that culminated around Thanksgiving.
The food pantry at St. James operates from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Those seeking food must reside in the 60616 or 60605 area codes.
