The Houston Texans have more problems at 1-8 than all the chalkboards at MIT.
However, defensive end Jordan Jenkins believes that simple steps can provide the Texans the opportunity to get better. The question becomes where the team can start applying such fundamental change, and Jenkins believes he has found a solution.
“I feel like we’ve been preaching it, toeing the line, doing what is required with regards to paying attention to detail but we can always take that next step and that’s what we need to do moving forward for this last little stretch if we want to have anything,” Jenkins said. “If we want to get to where we need to get to, we have to pay attention to detail and take it to the next level in practice.”
Jenkins suggested an accountability between the players, not top-down punitive action from the coaches.
Said Jenkins: “Whether that means added punishment, like as players, not coaching wise, nothing too crazy, just some extra sprints or small fines. If you jump offsides at practice, 30 extra pushups. Just try and stress that we need to have more attention to detail to get some of those key turnovers and key offside penalties out of the game.”
The Texans are tied for the 11th-most penalties in the NFL with 65, even though they have had a bye week. Houston also is 12th in penalty yardage with 552.
Jenkins stressed that the accountability between the players would have “no malicious intent there at all.”
“Just holding people accountable and trying to take the next step and doing whatever we can to stack these W’s,” Jenkins said.
Houston gets a chance for a W when they face the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Nissan Stadium. Houston has not beaten the Titans since Week 15 of 2019 as part of their last AFC South title.
