De Bruyne and Palmer to start - Man City predicted line-up vs RB Leipzig

Pep Guardiola has already confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne will start against RB Leipzig in what is set to be a heavily rotated side.

Manchester City will bring their Champions League group campaign to a close in Germany on Tuesday, already safe in the knowledge that they have qualified in top spot ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.

As a result of the dead rubber, Guardiola has been given a rare chance to make several changes to his starting XI and rest some of his key players ahead of the hectic festive fixture period.

Five senior stars have stayed at home and won't be involved at all: Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus who are both unavailable due to injury, as well as Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Rodri who have all been given the time off to rest as they continue to be the team's three best players at present.

The match will give a chance for City's returning stars to get more fitness under their belt and the manager has said that De Bruyne will start the game after he made his comeback off the bench against Watford on Saturday after recovering from Covid-19.

Jack Grealish and Phil Foden both made their first starts since returning from injury in the victory and both may keep their places to continue to build up their fitness.

There is also an opportunity for Guardiola to see what some of his promising youngsters can do in a risk-free environment but still against tough opposition and Cole Palmer feels likely to start. He could line up in the middle of the attack with Grealish and Riyad Mahrez flanking him.

That would see Foden move back into midfield for a one-off, joining De Bruyne and Fernandinho in the middle.

John Stones and Nathan Ake are almost certain to start in the heart of the defence, to give rests to Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte, with Aleks Zinchenko replacing Cancelo at left-back.

Kyle Walker returned from a knock on Saturday so there is little point in risking him in this match, so Under-21s captain CJ Egan-Riley may be another talented teenager to be given a chance.

There's also no reason not to make a change between the sticks, either, and Zack Steffen could be given a run-out in order for Ederson to have a night off.

With five substitutions permitted, we may well see Romeo Lavia, James McAtee and Joshua Wilson-Esbrand get minutes, too.

Man City predicted line-up vs RB Leipzig: Steffen; Egan-Riley, Stones, Ake, Zinchenko; De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Foden; Mahrez, Palmer, Grealish.
