DCU students organise Black Lives Matter protest over lecturer's 'horrendous' blog

DCU students have organised a Black Lives Matter rally to protest a lecturer's blog which one student says is "riddled with hate speech".

The blog, belonging to Dr Mark Humphrys from the University's School of Computing, contained comments such as "the whole Black Lives Matter movement in the US is nonsense built on sand" and "(George) Floyd was another useless criminal who dug his own grave".

Dr Humphrys denies there is hate speech on his website.

A screen grab of the blog went viral on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, with a number of students calling for action to be taken against Dr Humphrys with some labelling his comments "horrendous".

A statement released by the University said the blog doesn't "reflect the views of the University" but did not include any actions against Dr Humphrys.

DCU students - Christine O'Mahony and Darragh Adelaide - have organised a Black Lives Matter rally calling on the University to "sack" Dr Humphrys.

The demonstration will take place outside The U on DCU campus on Friday at 1pm and they expect a "big turnout".

Ms O'Mahony, a masters student of Political Communications, told Dublin Live she was "disgusted" by Dr Humphrys' blog and was "disappointed" by DCU's response.

She said: "We felt that the university's response was quite disappointing, they claim they care so much about diversity, equality and inclusion but they could not discipline their employees."

"There has to be some sort of discipline."

She added: "My message to Humphrys is that... You know you are lecturing a diverse class room so why are you running a blog riddled with hate speech?"

When Dublin Live put Ms O'Mahony's claims to Dr Humphrys, he denied his blog contains "hate speech".

Dr Humphrys said he will not be apologising for his views and called the protesting students' comments "infantile".

He said: "Everything I say is fair comment that you can agree or disagree with. Screaming for sackings is silly, infantile and also sinister. What's wrong with debating?"

A spokesperson for DCU said: "This matter is under review and as such we won't be commenting further at this time."
