DC’s new traffic stop rule under Trump takeover is sending shockwaves

Donald Trump declared not too long ago that Washington D.C. is now a crime-ridden city, and to counter that, he deployed 800 National Guard troops to patrol the nation’s capital. Now, reportedly, D.C. police have declared that they will also assist ICE officers in clamping down on immigrants through traffic stops. A major departure of the pro-immigrant policies that once existed in the city.

NBC reports that while crime in D.C. has been at its lowest in decades, Trump insisted that since a former DOJ employee was attacked while on his way to save a woman from carjackers, his administration must take over law enforcement in the city. Pam Bondi declared on the day the National Guard was deployed that it was the final day the city would be unsafe.

It appears now D.C.’s police have taken things further and are cooperating with ICE officers. While the city has never officially declared itself a sanctuary city — with Mayor Muriel Bowser even rejecting that tag — D.C. has been known for some pro-immigrant policies, such as allowing them to vote in local politics and, most importantly, limiting cooperation with ICE agents.

That’s all about to change now. NBC reporter Mark Segraves took to Twitter to post a screenshot of an executive order signed by D.C.’s Police Chief instructing traffic police to notify ICE officers if they encounter an illegal immigrant. They are also ordered to assist ICE in transporting suspects the agency has detained.

Initially, the ICE officers deployed to the city were given the job description of “routine practices of police officers,” which was not necessarily related to any form of deportation or mass immigration enforcement. But that didn’t last long, and soon enough, ICE was raiding Home Depot parking lots to sweep up any immigrants that might be situated there.

Trump’s mass immigration agenda has reached levels where now two major cities have had a National Guard deployment assisting the state in rounding up any immigrant without papers. Tensions keep rising, and people who feel the president’s policies are too inhumane have started acting up throughout the country — from mass protests in the streets to people confronting ICE agents. And that’s not even to mention the other side, which supports Trump’s policies and has now decided to become vigilantes to help ICE officers round up illegal immigrants.

The residents of D.C. who are in the country without paperwork will now have to contend with surviving while being constantly surveilled. When the mayor of D.C. and the police chief were reached for comment, neither responded. Reportedly, Mayor Bowser left the city for Martha’s Vineyard — the famed vacation spot. Bowser is expected back in office tomorrow afternoon, and perhaps then she will release an official statement acknowledging the executive order.

Trump’s administration campaign promise was to round up illegal immigrants with a police record, and they often make outrageous and unconfirmed claims about even deporting cannibals. But so far, it seems that the plan is simply rounding up all immigrants indiscriminately.
