Head of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdulhamid Dbeibeh’s recent visit to Turkey has angered Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar.
Haftar has not commented on the trip during which Dbeibeh and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated their commitment to the maritime deal between their countries.
Sources close to Haftar, however, said he criticized this position, which contradicts with Dbeibeh’s pledges to preserve Libya’s national sovereignty.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources remarked that Dbeibeh’s positions, which are in turn with Turkey’s, will “widen the divide with the LNA,” noting that the PM has not contacted or met with Haftar since his appointment.
Dbeibeh has not even visited the eastern city of Benghazi, the LNA stronghold, despite his repeated vows.
“This has raised questions that do not favor the country’s security and stability,” added the sources.
During his meeting with Dbeibeh, Erdogan had declared that the maritime agreement with Tripoli secures the national interests and future of both their countries.
Dbeibeh echoed his remarks.
