Dbacks pound Perdomo, Padres

SAN DIEGO_Jered Weaver is approaching an ignominious end to a storied career. On Saturday afternoon, hours after the ugliest start the veteran had ever experienced, the San Diego Padres shuffled him to the disabled list.

Luis Perdomo is still in the nascent stages of what could become a storied career. But on Saturday night, there was little that differentiated his ugly outing from the one that came before.

In a 9-1 shutout by the Arizona Diamondbacks, the right-hander surrendered a career high. Eight of the game's runs were scored off Perdomo, who was lifted with two on and no outs in the fourth inning.

Facing a potent offense, the 2015 Rule 5 draftee, looked not unlike the overmatched rookie he was a year ago, before he blossomed into the Padres' most promising starter.

The D-backs collected four consecutive hits before Perdomo, who was coming off four straight quality starts, retired a D-backs batter. Moments later, Chris Herrmann launched a two-run homer.

The Padres went into the bottom of the first trailing by five. For the first time in franchise history, the D-backs had scored five or more runs in the first inning in consecutive games.

Perdomo got two quick outs in the second before faltering again. Yasmany Tomas took advantage with a two-run single, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Arizona pounced again in the fourth, opening that inning with three singles. Perdomo walked off the mound after his shortest start since the first one of his career. (On May 14, 2016, he was not yet fully stretched out when he yielded two runs over two innings at Milwaukee.)

Perdomo's final line included 11 hits, a walk, a wild pitch and a hit batter.

A Padres bullpen that had been heavily taxed on Friday received a needed boost. Jose Valdez, who was recalled from Triple-A El Paso earlier Saturday, worked three scoreless innings in his Padres debut. The right-hander had been claimed off waivers from the Angels on May 10.

Jose Torres and Brandon Maurer also took the mound for the Padres. Over the last two games, San Diego relievers have combined for 14 1/3 innings of work.

The Padres walked five times but repeatedly stranded baserunners. They finished with four hits. The last, a ninth-inning infield single by Allen Cordoba, averted a shutout.

D-backs lefty Robbie Ray threw 7 2/3 innings without permitting a run.
