PHOENIX_The Chicago White Sox removed rookie pitcher Dylan Covey in the middle of an Arizona Diamondbacks at-bat because of left oblique soreness in Tuesday night's 5-4 loss at Chase Field.
After throwing a strike to Paul Goldschmidt with one out in the third, Covey called a conference on the mound and then walked off the field with trainer Herm Schneider. Chris Beck replaced Covey, and the Sox later announced Covey's injury would be re-evaluated Wednesday.
The injury spoiled Covey's quest for his first major-league victory, and he is the first Sox pitcher to go winless over his first eight starts since Ramon Garcia in 1991.
Covey gave up four earned runs, including home runs to Jake Lamb and Chris Herrmann in the first two innings, as the Sox fell into an early hole. A December Rule 5 draft pick, Covey has posted an 8.12 ERA over his first seven weeks in the majors.
Melky Cabrera and Todd Frazier homered in the first three innings off Diamondbacks lefty Patrick Corbin to keep it close.
Sox reliever Gregory Infante gave up a run on Brandon Drury's RBI double to center field in the fourth.
The Sox had some fun in the late innings. Yolmer Sanchez made his first career appearance in the outfield, courtesy of a sixth-inning double switch, and he made the catch for the first out after he entered.
Jose Abreu hit career homer No. 100 in the eighth, a solo shot to left field to cut the Diamondbacks' lead to 5-4. It was Abreu's ninth home run of the season, all of which have come on the road.
The Sox loaded the bases with one out after the homer, but Omar Narvaez and Sanchez struck out against reliever J.J. Hoover.
The Sox dropped to 3-6 on their 10-game road trip with the finale Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field.
