Dazzling Northern Lights display at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland thrills stargazers

Stargazers were treated to a spectacular show of the Northern Lights in the North East.

The picture above was taken by photographer Steven Lomas at Sycamore Gap, Hadrian's Wall, in Northumberland, on Wednesday night.

Stunning displays were also seen over Derwentwater, near Keswick, in the Lake District, into the early hours of Thursday.

The Northern Lights are normally only visible in latitudes closer to the Arctic with Scandinavian countries typically able to see the amazing display.

But some stargazers who braved the cold weather were able to get a vivid view of green, red and other coloured lights streaking through the night across the UK and as far south as Devon.

And many shared their dramatic photos on social media.

But this is not the first time the North East has witnessed such amazing views.

Thanks to a combination of a solar storm and a clear night, the Aurora Borealis were visible in Northumberland on Saturday.

There were shots of the Northern Lights at places including Dunstanburgh Castle and Bamburgh Castle.
