Daytona 500: Paul Menard accepts blame for 21-car pile-up

Paul Menard (No21) triggered a dramatic 21-car pile-up with just 10 laps remaining of Sunday's Daytona 500.

Menard’s turn into Matt DiBenedetto set off a catalogue of collisions in the chasing pack behind and he admitted: “I’ll take the blame for that one.”

The mass crash brought out the red flags and caused a lengthy break to racing as the defending champion Austin Dillon and Aric Almirola were among those forced to retire.

Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Daniel Suarez were also among those involved in the mess.

Almirola seemingly had the wildest ride, his back wheels getting lifted off the pavement and landing on David Ragan's windshield.

In all, there were five accidents in the final 20 laps.

After the final restart, Denny Hamlin won for Joe Gibbs Toyota Racing.
