Dayton shooting: Gunman kills nine people and injures 16 in second massacre

Nine people have been shot dead after a gunman opened fire in a bar in the United States.

Cops confirmed nine were killed and at least 16 have been taken to hospital following the rampage in Dayton, Ohio at around 1am local time.

Dayton Police Department were called to the Ned Peppers bar on East Fifth Street in the Oregon District of the US city.

Footage posted on social media showed people running as dozens of gunshots echoed through the streets.

In a tweet, police said: "Lt. Col. Carper: at 1:22am active shooter situation began in oregon district. The shooter is deceased.

"There are 9 others also deceased. At least 16 others went to area hospitals with injuries.

"We had officers in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly.

"The FBI is on scene to assist in this investigation."

The bar took to Instagram to say: "All of our staff is safe and our hearts go out to everyone involved as gather information."

The massacre comes just hours after 20 people were killed and 26 others were injured in a Walmart shopping centre in El Paso, Texas.

Two law enforcement officials identified the suspect taken into custody as 21-year-old  Patrick Crusius  of the Dallas area.
