The fate of Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel has finally become a little clearer mere days after DC Studios head James Gunn called the much anticipated sequel his “biggest issue.”
Speaking at a Q&A the director of the upcoming Superman film soothed fan fears over the possibility of The Batman 2 being canceled. Gunn addressed the rumors surrounding the film including the possibility that Robert Pattinson’s Batman could be brought into a shared universe with the David Corenswet Superman, “It is not like we’ve never discussed it.”

But of course, the conversation quickly turned to the potential sequel to the 2022 superhero flick. It’s been over three years and we’ve so far had no news regarding a new instalment. According to heroichollywood.com Gunn claimed “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally.”
He confirmed that the sequel was still very much being worked on although the delay was down to there not being a script. However, he expressed faith in director/writer Matt Reeves admitting he’s slow but that fans need to “Let him take his time.”
Is Matt Reeves’ Batman script ready now?
While Gunn has told fans to be patient it seems things might already be in motion, or at least they could be very soon. According to journalist Matthew Belloni, who has a fair bit of insider knowledge, the script for The Batman 2 is reportedly finished and Matt Reeves is expected to turn it in on Monday.

Belloni is a reputable source and a founding partner of Puck.news. He answered numerous questions from readers on his site this week and one of the most surprising details had to be his knowledge of the supposed Batman script. DC heads apparently expected the script over a year ago but you can’t rush perfection I guess.
The sequel is expected to begin filming January 2026 after Pattinson wraps up filming for Dune 3. If all goes smoothly then we can expect a release date of October 1, 2027. Of course, that’s a big if. Belloni admits that the delayed release date is dependent on numerous factors such as the script and preproduction processes going smoothly. Warner Bros. would also have to stick to its filming schedule for Dune part 3 otherwise that would push back the whole Batman production.

It seems most aren’t concerned with the film taking long, they’re just happy it hasn’t been canceled.

Regardless, Belloni’s news coupled with Gunn’s claims that DC hasn’t canceled Reeves’ Batman sequel are good news overall. While it’s still not 100% clear what’s happening with this film, we can rest assured that the project still seems to be moving ahead (albeit incredibly slowly) for now.
